Frequently Asked Questions
Is RetroPlay free?
Yes! The Free Collector tier is completely free โ full local management, all features. Pro adds cloud sync and a private game vault. No ads. No telemetry.
Which platforms are supported?
Currently: NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, Sega MD/Genesis, NDS, PS1, and Arcade. More coming โ the community votes on which platforms get added next.
Do I need to install anything to play in the browser?
No. Open the link, pick a game, play. Nostalgist (RetroArch compiled to WebAssembly) powers everything in your browser.
How does ROM matching work?
We use a pre-curated database with dual SHA1 checksums. Your ROM is identified instantly โ names, cover art, and metadata appear without any scraping or waiting.
What happens if my ROM isn't recognized?
RetroPlay is based on No-Intro and Redump datasets, supporting official ROM releases. Hacked or fan-translated ROMs may not auto-match, but can still be stored in your private vault. We continuously expand database coverage.
Is it legal to store ROMs on RetroPlay?
RetroPlay itself is fully legal software. We do not provide, host, or distribute any game ROMs. Cloud storage works like a personal drive โ you upload your own files, only you can access them, and we cannot view their contents. ROM legality depends on your local laws and whether you own the original game.
Can I trust it with a large collection? (500GB+)
Yes. RetroPlay uses SHA1 incremental scanning โ it only recalculates when files change, so giant folders won't slow it down. Large collections are what we built for.
Where are my save files stored? Will I lose them?
Saves are stored in a local SQLite database, always accessible offline. They auto-sync to your private cloud vault โ and you can export/backup anytime.
